Image Gallery - Mars in 2005

Mars is the most Earthlike of the planets. It is about half the diameter of the Earth and a tenth of its mass. Its orbital period of 1.9 years means that it and the Earth are close enough together for a few months every two years to make imaging practical.

The images on this page were made with a Quickcam 4000 webcam on a 300mm LX200 operating at f/20. This method involves collecting hundreds or thousands of individual frames and then picking the very best to stack and process. Some details on the method are here.

Mars, UT 2005.10.31 05:59. Image was made by combining a stack of 150 individual frames collected at 1/10 second exposure.
