November 5, 2009 Fireball

2009.11.05 FireballThis extremely bright fireball occurred at 10:59 PM MST over western Colorado. Although the Taurid meteor shower complex is currently active, this meteor is not a part of that shower, nor apparently of any other known shower.

Data has been recovered from the following cameras:

The image at left is from the Cloudbait camera. The meteor gradually brightened and ended in a brilliant terminal flare, which is magnitude -10 (about the same as a half Moon). The meteor was actually a bit brighter than this, as it is seen here through thin clouds.

The meteor began near Gunnison, Colorado, and descended westwards towards Montrose, ending a little south of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The general dynamics of the meteor don't strongly suggest that any meteorites were formed, and finding any in this area would be nearly impossible.

I'm waiting for additional camera data to determine this fireball's velocity and entry angle.
